Monday morning at a furniture retailer's dispatch bay is not a gentle start. Weekend orders have piled up, delivery slots are fixed, and three loading lanes need filling before the first truck arrives at nine.
This particular operation ships flat-pack wardrobes, side tables, and shelving. The cardboard they receive is thick, often double-wall, and until recently it went straight into a skip. Their packing material came on pallets from a supplier.
What changed was the P50-3. It is unusual in that it takes a single sheet of cardboard and splits it into three equal streams of mesh. One machine, three outputs. On a Monday, that means three dispatch lanes each get their own feed of protective material without anyone carrying anything across the floor.
The specifications matter here. 55cm cutting width, up to 15mm thickness, 18 metres per minute. The thickness figure is what allows them to process the double-wall board their furniture arrives in. Thinner machines would need that board cut down first, which defeats the purpose.
According to the dispatch supervisor, the biggest gain was not material cost. It was movement. Previously, a worker spent part of each shift moving packaging material from storage to the three lanes. That task is gone. The machine sits centrally, and each lane draws from its own output.
There are trade-offs. The machine needs a clear area around it, and the three output streams need to be positioned so that material does not pile up unevenly. They solved this by putting a simple bin under each stream.
Aircosan builds these units in their own factory and produces models up to 120cm wide. The supervisor mentioned this as a reason for choosing them-the sense that the company understands industrial throughput rather than just selling equipment.
By nine o'clock, all three lanes are loaded. The trucks leave on time. That is the whole point.
