Hospital supplies departments operate under constraints that most warehouses never face. Noise must stay low. Dust is unacceptable. Space is limited, and anything installed near patient areas has to justify itself quickly.


    One hospital we heard from manages the distribution of consumables-dressings, small instruments, tubing, and sterile packs-between departments and to satellite clinics. Their packaging needs are modest in volume but strict in nature. Items must be protected, but nothing can contaminate the packaging area.


    Their previous method involved foam inserts and crumpled paper. The foam created dust, and the paper was inconsistent. Neither was ideal in a clinical environment.


    The machine they settled on is the Aircosan PT10. It produces strips rather than mesh, which suits their needs-the strips fill gaps around boxed items without pressing on anything delicate. Specifications are 35cm width, up to 10mm thick, 10 metres per minute.


    What made the PT10 suitable was not throughput. It was the operating characteristics. The unit runs quietly enough to be used during normal working hours without disturbing adjacent areas. It produces very little dust because the cutting action is clean rather than tearing. And it fits on a standard storeroom shelf.


    The supplies manager noted one practical detail. Staff were trained in under an hour. There is no complex setup, no calibration routine, and no need for a dedicated operator. Anyone on the team can produce strips when a shipment needs to go out.


    Aircosan manufactures these units themselves and builds models up to 120cm wide for industrial customers. That manufacturing background was mentioned as a factor in the decision-the sense that the machine was designed by people who build equipment for demanding environments.


    Volume is low, perhaps twenty to thirty shipments a week. But every one of them leaves properly protected, and the storeroom stays clean. In a hospital, those two things matter more than speed.
