Paper moisture content is not on the specification sheet, and it is one of the most common causes of output inconsistency on a honeycomb paper machine. Paper that is too dry cracks when it passes through the die. Paper that is too damp forms poorly and loses strength after processing. Paper that has been stored in a humid warehouse absorbs moisture, and the first few meters of the roll behave differently from the rest.
The machine accepts kraft paper up to 80gsm, and both virgin kraft paper and recycled paper work. The specification covers the weight and the type, but it does not cover the condition of the paper when it reaches the machine. That condition is determined by how the paper was stored and how it was transported.
What Moisture Does to the Paper
Paper is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the air. The amount it absorbs depends on the humidity of the surrounding environment and on how long the paper has been exposed. A roll that has been stored in a dry warehouse behaves differently from a roll that has been stored in a humid one, even if both rolls carry the same grade label.
When paper is too damp, the fibers swell and the paper loses stiffness. When it passes through the die, it does not form cleanly, and the honeycomb cells come out uneven. The uneven cells affect the output quality, and the operator has to compensate by adjusting the pressure or by adding material.
When paper is too dry, the fibers become brittle. When it passes through the die, it cracks along the fold lines, and the honeycomb structure does not hold its shape. The cracked material is weaker, and it does not provide the same protection as material made from paper with the right moisture content.
How to Check Moisture Content
The first check is visual. Paper that is too damp looks darker and feels cool to the touch. Paper that is too dry looks lighter and feels brittle. Neither check is precise, but both catch the obvious cases.
The second check is a moisture meter. A handheld meter measures the moisture content of the paper, and the reading tells the operator whether the paper is within the acceptable range. The meter is inexpensive, and the check takes seconds.
The third check is a test run. Running a few meters of paper through the machine shows how the paper behaves. If the honeycomb cells are uneven or cracked, the moisture content is likely outside the acceptable range.
How to Store Rolls
Paper rolls should be stored in a dry, covered area, away from direct sunlight and away from sources of moisture. The rolls should be raised off the floor, because concrete floors transmit moisture. The rolls should be covered when they are not in use, because dust and humidity affect the surface.
The machine's pressure control supports automatic adaptation to paper thickness, with a clear pressure gauge for manual override. That adaptation handles some of the variation, but it cannot compensate for paper that is outside the acceptable range entirely. Storage conditions matter as much as the machine's settings.
What the Machine Delivers
A honeycomb paper machine with good pressure control handles normal variation in paper moisture without operator intervention. Die-cutting speed is adjustable between 5 and 18 m/min, and die-cutting width is adjustable between 200 and 500mm. A paper roll length of about 1700m, with a maximum unwind diameter of 500mm and a paper core inner diameter of 75mm, supports a long production run before the roll needs to be changed.
Power requirements are modest: 1.5kW total power at AC220V/50HZ, with no compressor, heating element, or adhesive system. A compact footprint of just over 1 cubic meter, dimensions around 950x1150x1260mm and net weight near 502kg, means the machine can sit at the packing bench. A die that lasts about 1.0~1.3 million meters keeps the cells uniform across the entire run.
The output from a honeycomb paper machine is biodegradable packaging and degradable packing material, a practical alternative to plastic packing materials, and it supports reuse cartons and paper recycling. Keeping the paper dry is what makes that output consistent.
