What Is Honeycomb Paper and How Does It Work?

Honeycomb paper is a cushioning packaging material made from virgin kraft paper. The paper goes through die-cutting and pressing to form a 3D honeycomb structure with a textured, elastic surface. That structure is what does the work. It is not decorative.

Here is how it functions. In its pressed form, the paper is flat and compact. When you stretch it, the structure opens into a mesh with a honeycomb texture. That mesh both conforms to the surface of an item and creates cushioning space inside the box. This dual behavior is why it can wrap, fill, separate, and line, all with the same material.

The expansion ratio is 1:7. That means a relatively narrow roll covers far more than its flat appearance suggests. It is also why a compact roll can handle a substantial packaging volume before it runs out. Honeycomb paper is plastic-free, recyclable, and biodegradable, and in many packaging scenarios it replaces 60% to 80% of plastic materials.
