Warehouse layout is usually designed around storage and movement. Packing stations are positioned where they can receive products from picking and send parcels to shipping. Cushioning material is treated as an input that arrives from a separate storage area. A honeycomb paper machine changes that assumption, and where it sits determines how much of the benefit the operation captures.

Option One: At the Packing Bench

The most direct placement is beside the packing bench. The machine produces cushioning as the operator packs, and the material goes straight into the carton. There is no retrieval step, no restocking step, and no material sitting in a separate area waiting to be moved.

A compact machine with a footprint of just over 1 cubic meter, dimensions around 950x1150x1260mm and a net weight near 502kg, fits beside a standard packing bench without blocking movement. Die-cutting speed is adjustable between 5 and 18 m/min, so the operator can match the machine to the packing pace. Die-cutting width is adjustable between 200 and 500mm, so the output matches the carton size.

Option Two: Central Production Area

Some operations prefer a central area where cushioning is produced in larger batches and distributed to multiple packing benches. This model works when the packing benches are close together and the material can be moved without damage. But it reintroduces the handling chain that on-demand production was supposed to remove. Material is produced in one place, moved to another, and stored until it is used.

The trade-off is between production efficiency and handling cost. A central model may produce material faster, but the handling cost is real and usually unmeasured.

Option Three: Decentralized Model

A decentralized model places a machine at each packing station or at a small group of stations. Each machine produces cushioning for its own bench, and there is no shared production area. This model suits operations with multiple packing areas that are physically separated, or operations with different product types that require different cushioning formats.

The machine runs on standard AC220V/50HZ at 1.5kW total power, with no compressor, heating element, or adhesive system. That simplicity means it can be deployed to multiple locations without electrical work or special installation. A paper roll length of about 1700m, with a maximum unwind diameter of 500mm and a paper core inner diameter of 75mm, supports a long production run before the roll needs to be changed.

What Placement Affects

Placement affects three things: handling labour, material consumption, and output consistency.

Handling labour drops when the machine is at the bench, because the retrieval and restocking steps disappear. Material consumption drops when the operator produces only what the parcel requires, rather than pulling from a shared stock. Output consistency matters more at the bench, because there is no batch inspection step. A die that lasts about 1.0~1.3 million meters keeps the honeycomb cells uniform across the run. A cutter shaft machined from precision alloy steel, CNC turned and ground, holds its geometry longer than a cheaper alternative. Pressure control supports automatic adaptation to paper thickness, so changing paper does not require retuning.

Where It Fits Best

A honeycomb paper machine suits operations with moderate packing volume and limited space: e-commerce shipping, logistics warehouses, chain stores, and small-to-medium packing stations. It is not a replacement for a large production line. Large lines take up at least 6 cubic meters and only support large rolls over 1 meter wide. The compact version supports 50cm diameter small rolls and can be placed next to a packing bench.

The output from a honeycomb paper machine is biodegradable packaging and degradable packing material, a practical alternative to plastic packing materials, and it supports reuse cartons and paper recycling. On August 12, 2026, the core provisions of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation fully entered into force, which adds a compliance dimension to the placement decision. Producing compliant cushioning at the bench is simpler than documenting compliant cushioning that was purchased and stored.
