Amazon FBA sellers face a different set of packaging constraints from other e-commerce operations. The packaging has to meet Amazon's requirements, it has to survive the fulfillment center's handling, and it has to arrive at the customer in presentable condition. The cushioning material inside the box affects all three.

Plastic cushioning is common because it is inexpensive and widely available. Paper cushioning is less common, but it has advantages that matter more in the FBA environment than in a general shipping operation.

What Amazon Requires

Amazon's packaging requirements focus on protecting the product during fulfillment center handling and during the final delivery. The requirements specify that the product must not move inside the box during handling, and that the packaging must not create a safety hazard for the associates who handle it.

Plastic air pillows and bubble wrap meet these requirements, but they have a drawback. They are difficult to recycle, and the customers who receive them often discard them in the general waste stream. That is a customer experience issue more than a compliance issue, but it affects the reviews that a seller receives.

How Paper Cushioning Differs

Paper cushioning made from kraft paper meets the same protection requirements. It holds the product in place, and it does not create a safety hazard. The difference is what happens after the customer opens the box.

Paper cushioning goes into the paper recycling stream, which is the same stream the box itself goes into. The customer does not have to separate the materials or decide which bin to use. That simplicity affects how the customer perceives the packaging, and it shows up in reviews.

Why On-Demand Production Matters for FBA

FBA sellers often ship in batches. A batch of orders goes to the fulfillment center, and then there is a gap before the next batch. During the gap, purchased cushioning material sits in storage.

A honeycomb paper machine produces the material when it is needed. The seller stores paper rolls rather than finished cushioning. A paper roll length of about 1700m, with a maximum unwind diameter of 500mm and a paper core inner diameter of 75mm, supports a long production run before the roll needs to be changed.

The machine runs on standard AC220V/50HZ at 1.5kW total power, with no compressor, heating element, or adhesive system. Die-cutting speed is adjustable between 5 and 18 m/min, and die-cutting width is adjustable between 200 and 500mm. Suitable paper is ≤80gsm, and both virgin kraft paper and recycled paper work.

Why Storage Fees Matter

Amazon charges storage fees based on the volume of inventory in the fulfillment center. Sellers who ship cushioning material into the fulfillment center pay for that space. Sellers who produce cushioning at the packing site do not, because the material is produced as the parcel is packed.

That difference matters more for sellers with high turnover. A seller who ships frequently pays storage fees on cushioning material that sits in the center waiting to be used. A seller who produces at the packing site only ships the product itself.

What the Customer Sees

The customer opens the box and sees the packaging. A box filled with plastic air pillows looks different from a box filled with paper cushioning. The paper material has a natural appearance that matches the box, and it does not create the static cling that plastic air pillows create.

For sellers whose brand depends on a particular presentation, the difference matters. For sellers whose brand depends on environmental claims, the difference matters more.

What to Consider

The practical considerations for FBA sellers are the same as for other operations. The machine produces consistent output, the material is compatible with paper recycling, and the production happens at the packing site rather than at the fulfillment center.

A die that lasts about 1.0~1.3 million meters keeps the cells uniform across the entire run. A compact footprint of just over 1 cubic meter, dimensions around 950x1150x1260mm and net weight near 502kg, means the machine can sit at the packing bench.

The output from a honeycomb paper machine is biodegradable packaging and degradable packing material, a practical alternative to plastic packing materials, and it supports reuse cartons and paper recycling. For FBA sellers, that combination affects compliance, cost, and customer perception at the same time.
